>> good saturday morning to you. 5:00 on the dot. i'm kira klapper in for katie marzullo. let's start with a first look we weather. >> good morning. it is going to be a beautiful day today. we are warming up. in fact, temperatures today will be quite pleasant. we will still see some numbers in the 60s at the coast but it will be clear. we are looking at very little in the way of fog this morning. just a little along the san mateo coast with upper 80s inland. kira. >> thank you, lisa. the second suspect in the boston marathon bombings and hospitalized this morning following his arrest last night. his brother was killed in an

earlier standoff with police. they are charged with killing three and injuring 80 others in boston. we have the latest. [explosions] >> good morning. the suspect was last listed in serious condition. his capture bringing some much-needed comfort to this community this morning. [screaming] [usa, uas! >> thank you! >> celebration and release. the second suspect in the boston marathon bombings off the streets and in custody. [cheers and applause] >> nineteen-year-old dzhokhar tsarnaev was found hiding in a boat in watertown, massachusetts last night, arrested after boston suburbs were put on ady-long lock down. more than 1 million residents told to stay inside as s.w.a.t. teams went door to door searching for the suspect. >> it's unbelievable. i was cooped up in my house for the last almost 24 hours just

wondering if the guy was in my backyard, if defense, you know, in my garage. or in my neighborhood. >> and he was. could youering, bleeding after a shootout where police that left his 267-year-old brother tamerlan dead. police said they tracked them down after they execute an m.i.t. officer and then led police on a wild chase. tsarnaev, he lived here for more than a decade, he got away but not for long. his arrest praised by the president. >> we've closed an important chapter in this tragedy. >> and by this community still in mourning. >> it brings a sigh of relief, and i think it really allows us to start the healing process. >> and we learned the fib has asked hospital officials not to give any more updates about the suspect's conditions, so we

still don't know if investigators have been able to question him about the motive. abc news. back to you. >> thank you, marscy. an odd twist in the shoot of course an m.i.t. officer. an event that touched off that manhunt. 26-year-old sean colyer was a young father with a six-month-old baby. they believe the tsarnaev brothers shot him in his squad cars on m.i.t.'s campus. the twist is that colyer recently began volunteering at the boxes gym with suspect number one, tamerlan tsarnaev, trained several years ago. the owner of the gym said it's unlikely the two ever crossed paths. one of those injured in the attack is an 11-year-old martinez boy and there is promising news about him this morning. yesterday aaron hern ate his first solid meal since being injured. he was struck in his leg and arm by shrapnel near the finish line as he waited for his mother to

relief for my family who lives back there and who was kind ever dealing with the immediate trauma and fear. >> passengers say it was an ordeal getting to logan international airport. >> there was a long line of cars and they were searching every car looking in the trunk, look underneath the cars, checking the ids of everyone coming inside the airport. >> for david and they had to drive from their home in vermont to catch the flight in san francisco. >> there were highway road signs flashing to say avoid boston, did not proceed to boston. >> carroll was running to raise money for cancer research a few days after the marathon she put her outfit back on. marathon bib back on and finished the last six miles. she said drivers were honkling their horns and people were stopping to thank her and even give her some donations. at sfo, abc7 news. >> even after last night's arrest security the remaining

sporting events remains tight and that was the case at at&t park with the giants playing their first home game since the boston bombings. some fans found themselves outside the park wait to go get in. >> you won't b getting it, so please have all your bags open. >> the search of nearly everyone coming into at&t park was part of the overall security. plenty of uniformed police and their bomb assisting dogs were posted throughout the area. even trash cans were wheeled away as a precaution. >> i think what they are doing is appropriate, and i think certain times call for certain measures. >> but the extra time spent on searching everyone caused a snarl of giants fans patiently waiting in lines outside. >> almost an hour now and we haven't even passed there. >> still they understood why it was happening and at least one fan experienced the tightened security in boston firsthand. >> they shut down all cabs,

service, told everyone to stay home, they said you have a shop, don't open up your shop and basically don't go out the front door. that was the word they put out. >> in the eighth inning giants fans tipped their hats to the boston red sox by swinging along to sweet caroline. [sweet caroline] >> the red sox had their home game called off because of the city-wide lock down. for san francisco police the attack in boston is something they are already studying. >> we will take it apart. law enforcement across the country will. we will train to it and we will be better for it. >> something that helped keep people calm in line was the fact that news of that second suspect being arrested in boston was breaking as people were in line. there were people who were learning about it on their smartphones and passing the word along to some of their fellow fans. at at&t park, abc7 news. >> abc7 news will continue to

>> people at boston commons cheered the news of the capture of the second suspect in the bombings last night and in nearby watertown. crowds spontaneously burst into applause and cheers as police cars passed by. meanwhile boston police are thinking of the victims, tweeting in our time of rejoicing, let us not forget the families of martin richard, lindsey lou, crystal campbell and officer collier. 58 still remain hospitalized. the fib spent a second day

yesterday at a company headquarters. the company makes a battery the suspects used in the bombings. yesterday the company gave fbi a list of people who bought batteries from them over the past few years. there are so many questions still unanswered but they know whoever bought the battery used within the bomb purchased it within the last few months. >> two fbi agents were at the company collecting information on customers who purchased ar% battery like this over the past few years. their 7.2-volt, 3,000miliamp hour nickel battery pack was used in the bombings. it consists of six 1.2-volt batteries. its a little more powerful than putting together six double-a batteries to power something. it was meant to be used it in things like remote control cars and trucks. they gave the federal investigators a list of people who purchased the batteries directly from their website and a list of the 100 hobby shops

that sell them. >> if it was from a retail store, obviously we would not have that information. but if they bought is directly from us, we have that information. and we also provided all the information on all the retail stores that we have told to. >> while they don't know who bought the battery, the list of customers will help the fbi piece together the boston terror plot. >> who perhaps made the order, it might not have been either one of these guys, it might have been somebody else. so you have a conspiracy, you have a collusion with other people, you have a bigger network. all of that is very important to the composite for the case. >> and while those questions remain unanswered, they do know somebody bought the battery recently. >> the battery pack bass received in december of the last year so it's been over the last couple months it was purchased so that narrows down the list quite a bit. >> neither of the suspects' names were on the list he gave to the fbi but he tells me the fbi is already done with their

investigation at the company. the company will continue to cooperate with authorities as they continue this search for answers. we have developing news in southwest china where a powerful earthquake has killed more than 100 people and injured many more. it was a 6.6 playing nude near a city of more than 1 million people in sichuan province. at least 124 are dead, thousands are injured so far. new video this morning shows the shaking as it happened. take a look. it goes on for more than 25 seconds. a hospital was evacuated with a triage set up at a courtyard outside. casualties are expected to rise as many of the areas of unreachable by road this morning. helicopters are on search and rescue missions. we will update the story as more information becomes available throughout the morning. the grim job of recovering those who lost their lives in the massive explosion in west texas continues.

there are 14 confirmed fatalities with at least 3 still missing. more than 200 were injured. president obama has pledged federal aid to the town where laura anthony continues to cover the story. yesterday laura spoke with residents who haven't lost their spirit, even after losing their homes. >> the inside is gone. the ceilings are gone and the insulation is laying on the floor. >> do you feel lucky, though, that you got out. >> #*? >> lucky for my wife. she was sitting in the living room on the couch and the ceiling fell on top of her. >> and some good news. laura reports all 144 patients living in the nursing home that was blown apart survived the blast. bay area democrats are determined to pass new gun control laws despite a failed attempt in the senate this week. at 1:00 today in palo alto congresswoman joins mike thompson to host a gun

prevention meeting. both vow not to let the outcome in the senate stop them from passing house legislation. they say 90% of americans support the effort. supporters can meet both california senators if they would like to thank them forecasting votes in favor of background checks. the north vallejo little league season has been shot indefinitely after shots were fired. a meeting will be held to discuss safety issues. allen wong has more from vallejo. >> the field were major league all-star pitcher c.c. sabathia played as a kid is empty. sounds of baseball silenced after a parent fired shots into the vehicle of a parent from the opposing team on wednesday. >> fired a weapon at a t-ball game. how do you bring a gun to a t-ball game, and second, how do you fire it off? >> now anthony said his son's

season has been cancelled indefinitely until the little league can figure out how to ensure the safety of their players. >> i don't know how many games were left, but i was really look forward to playing more. >> i don't want to cancel the whole season but i would rather lose the season than lose a kid. >> the vice president calvin hill said gunshots were fired several times near the field before the incident and even since. they said the parental behavior issues are common in other places. they blame it on a lack of parental involvement. >> the feel is that if more parents were involved, there would be fewer problems. >> police are still looking for the parent who fire the shots and now the fate of the north vallejo little league season rests on an emergency meeting this weekend and the number of parents that show up. details are posted on abc7news.com under "see it on tv." abc7 news. 5:18 right now.

lisa argen joins us now with a look at a beautiful forecast this weekend. it's even a little warmer this morning as i was getting in my car. >> definitely. we have 40s on the coast, but elsewhere plenty of 50s. not too hard to get going in morning. live doppler 7hd, nice and quiet out there. we are looking at no returns here, and, in fact, temperatures today will be quite comfortable. there's a little patchy fog along the san mateo coast and down by the monterey bay, but otherwise we are nice and clear as we start out this morning in emeryville where temperatures are mainly in the 50s. 41 half moon bay. 46 santa cruz. definitely much cooler at our coast. a look outside from the roof camera, the embarcadero where conditions are comfortable with 50 at the delta. 52 livermore and 52 union city

and 49 santa rosa as well as los gatos. as you head out this morning it should be pretty nice out there. and the temperatures will warm right on through the 50s. and that cloudy deck that you might have at the coast disappears. we will have a nice afternoon today with even warmer conditions tomorrow and summer-like weather for monday and tuesday. although that usually means coastal fog. we are going to be clear at our coast with temperatures close to 70 there. take a look at the 24 hour temperature trend. we are much, much warmer this morning. especially in the north bay. 10 to 14 degrees warmer with three to four degrees warmer for our friends in the south bay and east bay. high pressure firmly in control. it's offer the coast. it will build in by the early part of next week and as that does that will not only keep the storm track to the north but it keeps the are dry pattern with us. we are going to allow for much warmer temperatures. in fact, it looks like our heat will peek monday and tuesday with temperatures near 90. so plan on some pretty warm numbers. sunny now in the south bay.

side. the troubled bogey 787 jets could be back in the world within a week. fed the federal aviation commission try proved the revamped dreamliners. they said they will send instructions to airlines this week and list the three-- lift the three-month-old grounding order. boeing has completed 20 test flights with the new technology. it's dreamliner fleet was grounded in mid-january after batteries caught fire on at least two jets. it appears many american women chose to ignore a 2009 government recommendation against the wide use of mammograms. a study of nearly 28,000 women found that ma'amography rates actually rose slightly in women 40 do 49 years of age. between 2008 and 2011. you may recall in 2009 the u.s. preventative services task force recommended against routine

>> welcome back at 5:30 on this saturday morning. we are starting with a quick look at the weather. here's meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning, carolyn. hi, everyone. we are starting off with calm condition. we is have a little fog at our coast but numbers are pretty cool along the shoreline. we have some numbers dropping into the upper 40s from los gatos to santa rosa. otherwise 53 fairfield and 52 livermore. we are looking at a warming trend. here's a look at san jose starting tomorrow with numbers in the 80s. the warmest days on monday and tuesday. then the cooling trend by the end of the work week. what about today? the forecast for today for all the bay area cities and the look ahead, and it does include warmer days. in fact, very little in the way of a sea breeze. we will have that for you coming up. kira. >> thank you, lisa.

the second suspect in the boston marathon bombing is in custody this morning. he's in serious condition at a hospital being treated for gunshot wounds after his arrest last night. the first suspect, his brother, was killed by police earlier in the manhunt. now the healing begins. in boston people turned out to pay respects for the bombing victims. a memorial is growing at the finish line where two bombs exploded monday. we have been covering the manhunt in nearby watertown where fear and anger quickly turned to celebration. >> celebration in the streets of watertown after residents learned a second suspect in the boston marathon bombing had been caught. >> this is what we've been waiting for since monday. and we finally got both of them, and we can rest tonight, you know. >> brendan and mckayla spent the day sheltered in their apartment while an army of law enforcement hunched for the 19-year-old dzhokhar tsarnaev. >> we've been up since 3:30. it's been scary, we've been on

edge but we are so thankful for all the police and first responders. we felt safe all day. >> even as gunfire erupted nearby. >> we throughout it was people celebrating because they thought the lock down was over but then we found out it was actually gunfire. then we her it again later on probably around 7:30, 8:00. >> then news of the capture. >> the suspect has been taken into custody alive. [cheers and applause] >> i'm really happy that he was alive because i just want to know more and i think everyone wants to know why. what were his intentions? >> of course, we will know more in the days to come, but a lot of relief here in watertown. abc7 news. the 19-year-old suspect dzhokhar tsarnaev was captured hiding in a boat behind the home in watertown. we have a picture of that house. you can so the boat in the back to the left. the owner noticed blood on the watercraft, and also that the

tarp covering it was ripped. he lifted it, got a glimpse of him and immediately called police. authorities quickly swarmed the area and set up a helicopter with a heat sensing camera. camera confirmed someone was inside the boat. police then sent a robot to pull off the tarp. they tried to talk him out of the boat. he was unresponsive. we now no that's because of injuries he suffered during the gun battle that killed his brother late thursday night. authorities launched flash bang gonads before approaching him and then took hem into custody. >> president obama weekly message is all about the drama that captured the nation all week. he praised the undaunted spirit of the bostonians. all of those from those who rushed in to help to police. he said americans have proven they refused to be terrorized.

>> through the days that would test even the sturdiest of souls, boston spirit remains undaunted. america's spirit remains undimmed. our faith in each other, our love for this country, our common creed that cuts across whatever superficial differences we may have, that's what makes us strong. the republicans agree senator tim scott of south carolina calls the first responders amazing americans who put their own lives on the line. both addresses were recorded before the second suspect was finally captured last night. the boy scouts of america has announced a big change proposing to lift the ban on letting guy youngsters belong to the organization. the possible change in policy comes after the boy scouts conducted a survey earlier this year. but the scouts will continue to prevent gays from serving in leadership roles. a local scout wants that rule abolished so he can become a scoutmaster.

casey leonard is openly gay. >> it's confusing because it sends scouts the message that it's okay to be gay until you are 18. >> gay rights groups have pushed for a total reversal of the ban. some religious groups want it to stay in place. many scout troops are sponsored by churches. counsel syl will vote on it next week. >> there's been a drop in the number of unemployed californians. state's jobless rate dropped to 9.4% in march. that's down .2% from february. they credit it to an increase of more than 25,000 new jobs. one year ago california's unemployment rate stood at 11%. attentive deal is on the deal for the palo alto school district and it's teacher's union. our media partner, the san jose mercury news, reports 760 teachers would get a 3% pay raise and a one time bonus under the collective bargaining

agreement. a similar deal was reached with 520 employees at the california school employees association. the board of education will hold a public hearing on both agreements this tuesday at 6:30 p.m. on churchill avenue. final vote will be may 7th. well, no two ways about it, garbage is dirty. but at the biggest landfill in northern california, that garbage is helping to produce something extraordinary clean. we are talking about the ultima landfill near livermore. jonathan bloom put on his work boots to show us how all that trash is producing treasure. >> reporter: 25 tons of garbage. each truckload is just a small, smelly chunk of the 5,000 tons dumped here every day and the 50 million tons of trash hidden beneath the dirt at northern california's biggest landfill. for a lucky flock of sea loads, this is the mother load. you can keep them away.

but for humans it's just a worthless pile of junk, right? >> with while this may not be any man's treasure, it turns out there's treasure deep underneath it. smell that? that's the smell of fuel that will power the next generation of trash trucks. this giant transfer truck is literally running on garbage. all the trash gives off a lot of methane, and methane is the main ingredient in natural gas. >> it's raw and sucks it out of the landfill. >> he showed us the system that pulse the tracked gas out of the landfill. gas they normally have to in sin rate. now they pump it out and put it in the trucks as fuel. >> there's a dramatic reduction. >> sean turner said landfill gas is cleaner than natural gas we burn in our homes and for waste management it's cheaper. but it's only possible because of this.

>> welcome back at 5:41 on this saturday morning. you are getting a really nice gift from our hdrov cam from the abc7 news studios. looking at the bay bridge. a clear morning. we are just about, oh, 45 minutes away from what will be a lovely sunrise. 67 degrees in san francisco today. really heating up this week. meteorologist lisa argen will have your accuweather forecast. we ten to follow developing news in the boston marathon bombings. right now the surviving suspect from monday's terror attack is hospitalized in serious condition following his capture last night. he was found hiding in a backyard boat, suffering gun shot wounds from thursday night's shootout with police that killed his brother.

federal agents have yet to question him but they say they will not read him his miranda rights first because the forecast is imposing a public safety exception. that allows limited and focused interrogation of a suspect with his statements allowed as evidence when there is a reasonable need to protect the public from immediate danger. and from boston to big sur, there's a link that ties monday's boston marathon to the big sur marathon which take place a week from tomorrow. along highway 1 between big sur and carmel, organizers were in potassium iodine when the explosions happened. as abc7 news reporte david louie explains, they are now preparing to beef up security. >> 400 runners in the boston marathon are part of an elite group that will do back-to-back 26-mile races. a week from sunday they will be running the big sur international marathon. the race director was near the finish line when the devices exploded. >> but knowing where it was and how many people were there and how crowded the area was, it

was, you know, kind of an immediate gut check reaction that this is not good. >> the tragedy could have caused boston runners to cancel their big sur plans, but that hasn't happened. >> there's more determination than ever because there were many people who were part of this special group of people, 400 entrants who are part of the boston to big sur challenge, more determination ever to come here to big sur and finish their race. >> meetings are underway involving local, state and federal agencies. 76-year-old monterey runner, judy holloway, was back in the pack when the explosions happened in boston. but that's not going to deter her plans to run next weekend. >> i can see where you would be much more concerned about the security. as a participant, i'm not worried. >> the same holds true for pacific grove how school presence practical matt bell. he has been reviewing his arrival at the finish line.

temperatures up into the 70s. we will get a little bit of an offshore flow going. here's a look what you can expect for the look ahead in livermore this week. starting off tomorrow numbers will be climbing into the mid-80s. look at monday. upper 80s. we will stay that way an tuesday. just a little bit of cooling comes midweek. then by the end of the work week, looks like that cooling sea breeze will manage to bring the temperatures into the 70s inland. but today we will keep it cool and comfortable from low 60s half moon bay, upper 60s san francisco. plenty of low 70s from richmond and oakland. up he were 70s san jose. 82 antioch. so a pretty nice day. 72 in santa cruz. our look ahead, we're talking about temperatures in the low 60s shoreline with lower 80s today. but by mid-80s tomorrow it should be feeling good. by monday and tuesday look at the trend. warmest weather inland, 80s to neared 0. you notice our coastal temperatures warmest on tuesday.
